The songs on this soundtrack range from hauntingly beautiful to well-orchestrated noise to odd and disconcerting, making the album as a whole a bit fidgety. Gems from The Willowz and Beck’s break-up ballad “Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime” round out the album.

The forever sunny Polyphonic Spree also counts two of their songs on the album, “Light and Day” and “It’s the Sun.” Tom DeLaughter’s music has always seemed akin to Jon Brion’s, so the Spree’s music meshes with the soundtrack and movie beautifully. Blue Sky,” which, wonderfully, makes an appearance on the soundtrack. “Eternal Sunshine” came out when I was in fifth grade, before I was allowed to see R-rated movies, but I distinctly remember seeing the trailer and watching it obsessively- and, as a result, falling in love with ELO’s song “Mr. The non-Jon Brion songs on the soundtrack are extremely well-chosen as well. To me, each so flawlessly fits the film it almost sounds as if Charlie Kauffmann was inspired to write the love story because of these songs, not the other way around. My favorite tracks would have to be “Peer Pressure” and “Row,” which are much more sweeping and romantic.

On “Howard Makes It All Go Away” and “Sidewalk Fight” the mood picks up considerably, but still has an almost creepy happiness to the jaunty plucked strings and keys. Tracks like “Collecting Things” and “Bookstore” also use slightly affected strings and piano to build a haunting tone for the film, fitting with Joel’s confusion and anxiety about the memory-loss operation. The most intriguing thing about this track, though, is the faint sound of a rewinding and fast-forwarding strings track in the background, hinting at the events of the movie to come. The opening theme (uh, “Theme”) is floats along delicately with lilting piano and a slowly plodding bass line. If I had to choose a desert island Jon Brion soundtrack though, it would probably be “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”īrion’s score, as well as the other songs on the soundtrack, complement the film, which is one of my all-time favorites, perfectly. In fact, I buy soundtracks simply based on the fact that Jon Brion’s name appears in the movie credits. However, I respectfully disagree with these people. I’ve met people who find his scores boring, or too poppy, or just think that they all sound the same. Jon Brion is a love him or hate him kinda guy. These are some of the soundtracks I like! In a handy weekly column. I love music! I love movies! I love talking about music in the movies! Apparently, so does everyone else.
